ETOBICOKE – MPP Christine Hogarth was honoured to join the Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke for the 2024 Boundless Awards, a special evening dedicated to celebrating the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations committed to empowering women and combatting combat gender-based violence in the community.
During the event, held Friday, September 27th, MPP Hogarth announced a $43,700 grant for Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke from the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services under the Partner Facility Renewal program, earmarked for critical repairs at the Women’s Habitat facility.
“Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke has long been a pillar of support in our community,” said MPP Hogarth. “As your provincial representative, I’ve witnessed the profound impact of their work. These funds are crucial in ensuring that Women’s Habitat can continue to provide a safe space for women and children in need.”
“Community agencies make our province stronger and more vibrant by connecting people to the services they need, where they need it” said Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services. “Our government is investing in hundreds of local community agencies so that they can spend more time helping people and less time worrying about building repairs.”
“We (at Women’s Habitat) are extremely grateful to our funder (MCCSS) for this funding from the Partner Facility Grant. Organizations like ours depend on such funding and support to ensure that we can continue to provide these essential services for survivors of gender-based and intimate partner violence safely as we endeavor to create and sustain services and workspaces that are safe. This funding will support us to attend to some much-needed repairs in one of our facilities. On behalf of our clients, staff and Board we, thank MCCSS and all that made this possible. A special thanks to our MPP Christine Hogarth for her long-time commitment to the work of Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke,” said Carla Netto, Executive Director, Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke.
During the event, MPP Hogarth highlighted key legislative and budgetary actions, including her role in unanimous passing of a Motion by the Ontario Legislative Assembly in June 2023 to advance the work on Clare’s Law in the province, which would provide confidential information about intimate partner violence to those at risk. MPP Hogarth also underscored the importance of Keira’s Law, which mandates gender-based violence training for judges and Justices of the Peace.
In addition, MPP Hogarth outlined the Ontario government’s investment of $1.4 billion in initiatives that support victims and survivors of gender-based violence, including emergency shelters, 24-hour crisis lines, safety planning, and transitional housing. She mentioned that an additional $13.5 million over three years is being provided to strengthen services for women survivors of violence.
As part of the evening’s recognition, MPP Hogarth had the privilege of presenting the Boundless Dedication Award to Doreen Lett. Since 2019, Doreen has been a passionate donor, volunteer, and advocate, going above and beyond to assist Women’s Habitat in countless ways, including coordinating holiday hamper deliveries during the pandemic.
“It is for her tireless dedication and inspiring heart that I’m excited to present this award to Doreen Lett,” MPP Hogarth said in her closing remarks.
