Newsletter: August Recap

A message from Christine Hogarth:
Hello Friends,

As we bid farewell to the summer, I hope you and your loved ones have had the chance to create lasting memories. With the start of the new school year upon us, I was delighted to join the Minister of Education to welcome students to the newly rebuilt Holy Angels Catholic School. I want to extend my best wishes to all students as they embark on a new year of education, discovery, and achievement.

The Ontario government remains committed to ensuring that our schools are safe, supportive, and thriving environments for all students. New policies have been introduced to enhance safety and focus in the classroom. A province-wide ban on cellphone use during instructional time is now in effect, along with new regulations that prohibit vaping in the school setting. Additionally, we are taking action to protect our children and communities by banning supervised drug consumption sites within 200 metres of schools and childcare centres.

Throughout the summer, my team and I have been active in the community, knocking on doors and listening to your concerns. I want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts with me, whether at the doorsteps or during our weekly coffee chats. One issue that stood out in our conversations was the overwhelming concern about the bike lanes on Bloor. Nearly 60% of Etobicoke-Lakeshore residents expressed their desire to remove these lanes, according to a poll conducted on my website. While the final decision rests with the City Council, I will continue to advocate for our community’s voice to be heard on this matter.

I’m also pleased to share some positive developments in our riding. Recently, I announced nearly $7M in funding for post secondary infrastructure at Humber College. This investment will provide students with modern instructional equipment, ensuring they acquire the skills needed to thrive in today’s workforce.

In addition, our government is supporting local manufacturing by backing PurParket’s $5.7M investment, which will create 20 new jobs right here in Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

I’d also like to highlight an important opportunity to recognize outstanding members of our community. Older adults in Etobicoke-Lakeshore play a significant role in enriching the social and cultural life in our community. Nominations are now open for Ontario’s Seniors Achievement Awards. If you know a senior who has made significant contributions to our community, I encourage you to nominate them here and celebrate their efforts.

Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement. Let’s make this a successful school year and continue building a stronger Etobicoke-Lakeshore together.

Sincerely,

Christine
