As we welcome 2023, I want to thank everyone for their incredible work in continuing to make Ontario the best place to live.
2022 was a year of progress for your Ontario government in building a stronger foundation for jobs, prosperity and healthier communities in 2023 – both across Ontario and here in Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

Ontario Upskilling More Nurses to Work in Critical Care
The Ontario government is investing over $4.6 million in the Michener Institute to remove financial barriers for nurses wanting to upskill to work in critical care areas of hospitals. The funding provides free tuition for students and all college and hospital costs, including backfilling their current roles to ensure continuity of care, and allows nurses to train to work in critical care areas of hospitals.

Local Pharmacies Now A One-Stop Shop For 13 Common Ailments
Starting January 1st, pharmacies can be your one-stop shop to get prescriptions for some of the most common ailments, including pink eye, rashes, insect bites, and urinary tract infections, at no extra cost. This is includes allowing pharmacists to prescribe Paxlovid, an antiviral treatment option used to reduce severe outcomes from COVID-19. All Ontarians are strongly encouraged to keep up to date with vaccinations, which remains the best way for people to stay healthy this flu and respiratory illness season and prevent unnecessary visits to the hospital.

Ontario Providing Free Naloxone Kits in Workplaces
The Ontario government is launching a first-of-its-kind program to make free naloxone kits (and free training) available at workplaces where there is a risk of staff witnessing or experiencing an opioid overdose. For up to two years, Ontario will provide free nasal spray naloxone kits to businesses at risk of opioid overdoses through the Workplace Naloxone Program and free training needed to equip staff with the tools to respond to an opioid overdose.

Ontario Keeping Etobicoke-Lakeshore Seniors Healthy, Active, and Connected
The Ontario government is investing in its seniors in Etobicoke-Lakeshore by funding nearly $130,000.00 in seven projects that will help seniors stay safe, fit, active, healthy and socially connected across the community with Seniors Community Grants. Congratulations to all the recipients from Etobicoke-Lakeshore on receiving the Seniors Community Grants.

In addition, the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility is is pleased to advise that applications are now being accepted for this years Seniors Community Grant program which will support local not-for-profit community groups and organizations to deliver programs and learning opportunities. The application portal on the Transfer Payment Ontario (TPON) site has now opened and applications will be accepted until 5:00 PM on March 6, 2023.

Ontario Investing $4 Million to Help Drive World-class Research, Development and Commercialization
The Ontario government is investing $4 million to support greater collaboration between industry and the postsecondary education and research sectors to create well-paying jobs in local communities and help build a resilient economy. The investment will support the Ontario Collaborative Innovation Platform, a new online portal to match industry professionals with equipment, facilities and experts at postsecondary institutions.

The Ontario government is updating high school courses in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), including learning related to the skilled trades to ensure students have the cutting-edge digital literacy and modern technological skills to lead the global economic, scientific and societal innovations of tomorrow.

Ontario Helping Etobicoke-Lakeshore Non-Profits Improve Community Services
The Ontario government is providing nearly $278,000 in capital grant funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to help 2 non-profit organizations in Etobicoke-Lakeshore deliver much-needed community support programs. These grants will support organizations that are making a positive impact in communities throughout the province. Congratulations to the recipients from Etobicoke-Lakeshore on this wonderful news!

Ontario Creating More Affordable Child Care Spaces Across the Province
The Ontario government is making child care more affordable and accessible for families across the province, creating an additional 53,000 new, affordable licensed child care spaces by December 2026 – bringing our total to 86,000 new spaces since 2019. The new spaces will be allocated to communities across Ontario using a model that incorporates demographics, socio-economic indicators, and existing licensed child care capacity.

Ontario Flowing More Funding for Municipal Transit
The Ontario government is providing municipalities with up to $505 million to help ensure municipal transit systems can continue to deliver safe and reliable transit services. The funding is being delivered through Phase 4 of the federal-provincial Safe Restart Agreement. Municipalities will be able to use their funding allocations to cover revenue losses, operating expenses, and provincial transit priority projects, including fare and service integration and On-Demand transit.

Recognizing Recipients of the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards
The Ontario government is recognizing 36 Ontarians in Etobicoke-Lakeshore with a Volunteer Service Award. It is an annual award honouring the exceptional contributions of individuals providing dedicated service to a single organization. The 4,555 recipients from across the province, support a wide range of organizations and causes, including those serving families, children and youth, vulnerable people, hospitals, senior centres and food security programs.

Great to meet with the Ontario Fire Fighters and Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association to discuss strategies on how to keep Ontarians safe.
Despite the rainy weather, that surely didn’t take the smiles off children’s faces at this years, Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make this year’s event such a success.
Great time meeting with Film Ontario. Let’s continue to support and market over 700 businesses in Etobicoke-Lakeshore.
Christmas is the time of joy and a time of giving to our families, friends and neighbours. During the month of December, I visited long-term care homes across Etobicoke-Lakeshore.
At this years Christmas dinner hosted by Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke.
Great meeting with partners from Food and Beverage Ontario to discuss the foremost issues affecting the food and beverage processing industry.
Lovely time dropping by the Franklin Horner Community Centre’s Christmas Market and seeing the amazing vendors kickstart the holiday season.
