September 2023 Recap

Dear Neighbours,

I can find signs of Fall, with no problem at all. But whatever the weather, there’s nothing like the spirit and resilience of the people I encountered in Etobicoke-Lakeshore during September.

I participated at Taste of the Kingsway – Etobicoke’s largest street festival – which brings out the best and most vibrant dimensions of our community. I stopped by the Franklin Horner Community Centre for its Extravaganza, which brings out the surrounding community for a day of music and family fun.

As our students headed back to school for the new year, I attended the inauguration of the 2023-24 school year at J. Haller Polish School.

Together with my colleague, the Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, I toured the facilities at New Haven, which is a registered non-profit charity in my Riding, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of those in need, by providing food, clothing and other resources.

I took part in Ukrainian Fest –especially important this year – which showcased Ukrainian arts and culture in our city and across Ontario. And I participated in the Long Branch Neighbourhood’s fifth annual Tree Fest, highlighting – especially for kids –the importance of biodiversity.

Each month I return to the Legislature refreshed and reinvigorated by the people I meet in our Riding, and the spirit and determination they demonstrate in these uncertain times. It all makes me proud to say, “I am the Member from Etobicoke-Lakeshore.”

Update on Industrial Spill Contaminating Humber River and Mimico Creek
As reported previously, I have been closely monitoring progress on cleaning up the after-effects of July’s industrial fire. All provincial and municipal agencies involved in the remediation of the affected areas have been working closely together, and the province has begun an assessment of potential human and ecological effects, to decide whether more detailed investigation is required. The company responsible is expected to submit a plan to restore the affected areas later this month. I commit to keeping you posted.
